  41.        This   document   contains  information  on  HyperWare's:  Shareware 
  42.        License,   product   disclaimer,  additional  license  plans,  order

  47.        for the HyperKey product. It outlines the procedure  for  installing
  48.        HyperKey,  and  includes additional information for customization.

  57.        This  software  and documentation is protected by both United States 
  58.        copyright  law and international treaty provisions. This "Shareware" 
  59.        version  of  HyperKey is NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN NOR FREE SOFTWARE. Users 
  60.        are  granted  a  limited  license to make and use an evaluation copy 
  61.        for  trial use on a private, non-commercial, non-governmental basis, 
  62.        for   the  express  purpose  of  determining  whether  HyperKey  is 
  63.        suitable  for  their  needs.  At  the  end  of this trial period you

  90.        HyperKey  meets your needs within 3 months. If you require a longer 
  91.        period,  please  consider your motives: a registered license is very

  270.               Introduction to HyperKey
  271.  
  272. HyperKey boosts performance of your PC by enhancing your
  273. keyboard. It gives you complete control over your keyboard's
  274. Typematic functions, providing Type Ahead Buffering,
  275. Typematic Pacing for instant stops while scrolling or repeating,
  276. Clicks for silent keyboards, Touch Shifting, and more.

  279. HyperKey versus BIOS
  280.  
  281. Your PC has a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) that
  282. normally controls your keyboard functions. BIOS does very
  283. little to provide support for many windowing and scrolling type
  284. applications common in today's PC systems. Both the Delay to
  285. Repeat (Typematic Delay) and the Period of Repeat
  286. (Typematic Rate) are slow and cumbersome. Although PC
  287. BIOS provides a Type Ahead feature, it is a scant 15
  288. characters. Type Ahead buffering can be both an advantage
  289. and a disadvantage. If you are waiting for a slow program to
  290. request more input, you may enter it before you are prompted,
  291. saving time when the program needs your input. However,
  292. when you are scrolling or repeating some keystroke, Type
  293. Ahead causes you to overshoot your target and then beeps
  294. incessantly as your application complains that you have
  295. exceeded its limits.
  296.  
  297. HyperKey addresses all these problems. You may set the
  298. Typematic Delay and Typematic Period to any values. Type
  299. Ahead buffering provides 128 keystrokes and does not fill with
  300. repeated keys as BIOS does. The Typematic Period is paced to
  301. match your application's needs and will never overshoot or get
  302. ahead of your application. In summary, HyperKey allows your
  303. PC Keyboard to excel in speed and performance.

  305.                       Chapter 2
  306.                  Installing HyperKey
  307.  
  308. This chapter contains both the automatic and manual
  309. procedures for installing HyperKey. Before you actually install
  310. HyperKey on your system, read all of Part II of this manual
  311. and any READTHIS files on the disk.
  312.  
  313. To install HyperKey, you will need:
  314.  
  315. 1)    One of the following computer types: IBM PC, XT, AT,
  316.       Portable, PS/2 etc.; Compaq Portable, DeskPro,
  317.       DeskPro II, etc.; or any other 100% IBM-compatible. If
  318.       you have a near-compatible, you may be able to use
  319.       HyperKey, but you should follow the more cautious
  320.       installation procedure outlined in Appendix A.
  321.   
  322. 2)    Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system, or 100%
  323.       compatible; versions 2.0 through 4.0 are acceptable.

  326.  
  327. Backup Your System
  328.  
  329. It is a good idea to backup your hard disk before installing any
  330. new program. This is especially true if you have a particularly
  331. complex or non-standard system.
  332.  
  333.  
  334. The Install Program: INST_KEY.EXE
  335.  
  336. To install HyperKey on your hard disk, run the
  337. INST_KEY.EXE program. Place a backup of the HyperKey
  338. floppy in Drive A: and type the following:
  339.  
  340.       A:INST_KEY<Enter>
  341.  
  342. Note: <Enter> means that you press the <Enter> key.
  343.  
  344. 1.    You will first be asked if you want to install
  345.       HyperKey. If you have a complete system backup,
  346.       enter "Y". Note: When INST_KEY prompts you
  347.       for a response, enter only the first letter of your
  348.       choice.
  349.  
  350. 2.    Verify that your HyperKey floppy is in Drive A: and
  351.       proceed with the installation by pressing the Space Bar.
  352.  
  353. 3.    You will be asked whether you want to install HyperKey
  354.       as a device driver or as a TSR. We recommend the
  355.       device driver method, which will use less Conventional
  356.       memory. If you have DOS version 2.xx, you must use the
  357.       TSR version.
  358.  
  359. 4.    Enter the letter of the disk drive where you plan to
  360.       keep the HyperKey files. This will typically be Drive C:,
  361.       but your configuration may differ.
  362.  
  363. 5.    You may now specify any HyperKey options. Please
  364.       refer to Part III, Chapter 3, "HyperKey Parameters,"
  365.       before making selections.
  366.  
  367. 6.    Reboot your computer to complete installation of
  368.       HyperKey: simultaneously press <Ctrl><Alt><Del>.

  370.  
  371. Manual Installation
  372.  
  373. For users who are familiar with the DOS operating system, this
  374. section provides a quick review of procedures to manually
  375. install HyperKey.
  376.  
  377. HyperKey may be installed as an MS-DOS Device Driver or as
  378. a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program. Most
  379. commonly, HyperKey may be installed as a device driver, but
  380. for some near compatibles it may be necessary to install
  381. HyperKey after some other TSR that makes your system
  382. keyboard IBM compatible. If you choose the device driver
  383. method, you must include the HyperKey specification in your
  384. CONFIG.SYS file. Use a text editor to update the
  385. CONFIG.SYS file on your boot drive root directory.
  386.  
  387. The HyperKey device driver definition is normally before any
  388. other device driver definition, as in the following example:

  405. If you choose the TSR method, you also may run hyperkey.exe
  406. at the DOS Command prompt; alternatively, you may place the
  407. hyperkey.exe specification in your AUTOEXEC.BAT system
  408. file on your boot directory.

  415.                  HyperKey Parameters
  416.  
  417. You control the operating characteristics of HyperKey via the
  418. command line parameters you specify in your CONFIG.SYS or
  419. AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  420.  
  421. Parameter  Definition
  422.  
  423. D:nn       TYPEMATIC DELAY
  424.            Sets the delay time before the key repeats itself,
  425.            starting from when you hold down the key, until
  426.            repetition begins. Start with a value of 350. Units
  427.            are in milliseconds.
  428.  
  429. R:nn       TYPEMATIC PERIOD
  430.            Sets the minimum time between repeats of a key
  431.            after the initial Typematic Delay. Smaller values
  432.            repeat faster, larger values repeat more slowly.
  433.            Start with a value of 30. Units in milliseconds.
  434.  
  435. P:nn       TYPEMATIC PITCH
  436.            Allows you to decrease the TYPEMATIC
  437.            PERIOD automatically after each repeated key.
  438.            The value nn is subtracted from the repeat period
  439.            after each repeated key. Default is 500. Units are
  440.            in microseconds.
  441.   
  442. S:nn       TYPEMATIC SPAN
  443.            Sets the number of repeat characters to be
  444.            affected by the TYPEMATIC PITCH control.
  445.            For example, if you select a TYPEMATIC
  446.            PITCH of 500 and a TYPEMATIC SPAN of 10,
  447.            each of the first 10 repeated keys will repeat
  448.            faster than the previous one by 500 microseconds
  449.            (1/2 millisecond), then remain constant for all
  450.            keys thereafter. Default is 0 (disabled).
  451.  
  452. H:nn       SPAN HOLDOFF
  453.            Allows you to delay the initial effects of
  454.            Typematic Span function. The repeat period will
  455.            remain constant for nn characters before the
  456.            Span functions begin to decrease the period
  457.            (increase the rate of repeats). For example, you
  458.            have set the SPAN to 30 and the PITCH to 500,
  459.            and now you want the first 5 characters to repeat
  460.            without increasing the rate. You set the SPAN
  461.            HOLDOFF to 5. Default is zero.   
  462.  
  463. B:b        EXTENDED BUFFERING
  464.            Enables HyperKey's Type Ahead buffer. B or 
  465.            B:+ to enable; B:- to disable. Default is enabled.
  466.            Note: If after installing other enhancement
  467.            products, you get two or more keys delivered for
  468.            each key you strike, disable this option.
  469.  
  470.  
  471. B:nn       EXTENDED BUFFER SIZE
  472.            During installation, the size of the extended
  473.            keystroke may be specified. Values for nn may
  474.            range from 16 to 4096. Two bytes are required
  475.            for each keystroke. Default is 128. 
  476.  
  477. I          KEYBOARD LOCK INDICATORS
  478.            Changes the Keyboard Lock Indicators, such as
  479.            CapsLock and NumLock. Use the first letter of
  480.            the indicator name, UPPER-CASE sets the
  481.            indicator, lower-case clears the indicator.
  482.            Indicators are CAPSLOCK, NUMLOCK,
  483.            SCROLLLOCK and INSERTSTATE. Example: 
  484.  
  485.       d:>HyperKey -ICNSI ;Sets all indicators.
  486.       d:>HyperKey -ICn   ;Sets CAPSLOCK,
  487.                             clears NUMLOCK.

  489.  
  490.            Some computers do not accept indicator changes
  491.            by device drivers, therefore you may need to
  492.            execute Hyperkey during AUTOEXEC.BAT
  493.            initialization to change the indicators after
  494.            BOOTING the machine.
  495.  
  496. A:b        ACTIVE
  497.            Enables all HyperKey functions. A:+ to enable;
  498.            A:- to disable. If you discover one of your
  499.            programs is incomputable with HyperKey, you
  500.            may disable it during that program's use.
  501.  
  502. C:b        CLICK ON MAKE
  503.            Issues a "Click" when a new Key is Struck. Enter
  504.            C or C:+ to enable Clicks; C:- to disable. Default
  505.            is disabled.
  506.  
  507. C:nn       CLICK PITCH
  508.            Sets the "Pitch of the Click". This function is
  509.            machine speed dependent. Experiment to create
  510.            the sound you find most pleasing. Default is 100.
  511.  
  512. CR:b       CLICK ON REPEATS
  513.            Issues a "Click" on ALL Keys, new and repeated.
  514.            CR:+ to enable; C:-to disable. Default is
  515.            disabled.
  516.  
  517. L:n        CLICK PERIOD
  518.            Sets length of time the "Click" sounds. Parameter
  519.            is machine speed dependent. Experiment to find
  520.            a pleasing value. Default is 32.
  521.  
  522.  
  523. T:b        TOUCH SHIFTING
  524.            Sets touch shifting mode. Allows you to enter a
  525.            shifted keys combination serially. For example, to
  526.            enter <Ctrl><F1>, simply press the <Ctrl> key
  527.            and release, then press the <F1> key and
  528.            release. Directly speaking, Touch Shifting
  529.            converts serial keying combinations to the
  530.            equivalent parallel keying operation. Touch
  531.            Shifting is very useful for 101 and 102 key
  532.            Keyboards. T or T:+ to enable; T:- to disable.
  533.            Default is disabled.
  534.  
  535. OK         OVERRIDE DISPLAY METHOD
  536.            Allows you to select the display method.
  537.            HyperKey normally displays data directly via the
  538.            Video BIOS. OK or OK:+ forces I/O directly to
  539.            the Video BIOS, while OK:- forces DOS I/O.
  540.            Alternatively, the standard output device may be
  541.            redirected to any device or file. Default is direct
  542.            to Video BIOS. In the following example,
  543.            HyperKey will display the report via DOS
  544.            Standard Output device.

  549.            CON (console) device.

  553. OK:nn      OVERRIDE COLORS/ATTRIBUTES
  554.            Allows you to select the Colors/Attributes for the
  555.            Current Display. Color displays provide 16
  556.            foreground (text) colors to be applied on either
  557.            8 (CGA) or 16 (EGA/VGA) background colors.
  558.            Monochrome displays provide a variety of display
  559.            attributes; some allow two or more intensities,
  560.            underlining, blinking, etc. For CGA displays there
  561.            are 120 useful combinations and for EGA/VGA
  562.            displays 240. Monochrome displays vary and are
  563.            generally less than CGA. Value nn may be
  564.            entered in either decimal or hexadecimal formats.

  581. OKC:nn     OVERRIDE COLORS ONLY
  582.            Same as OK:nn, except only Color Display
  583.            attributes are affected. Useful for systems with
  584.            both monochrome and color displays.

  586. OKM:nn     OVERRIDE ATTRIBUTES ONLY
  587.            Same as OK:nn, except only Monochrome
  588.            Display attributes are affected.

  641. Changing HyperKey Parameters after Installation
  642.  
  643. After installing HyperKey, you may alter the operating
  644. parameters by running hyperkey.exe at the DOS prompt. Only
  645. the parameters you give on the command line will be changed.
  646. For example, assume that you installed HyperKey using the
  647. device driver method and specified a Typematic Period of 25
  648. milliseconds. Later you decide the repeat rate could be a little
  649. faster. Simply enter at the DOS prompt: 
  650.  
  651.       D:>hyperkey R:18
  652.  
  653. HyperKey will now deliver repeat keys every 18 milliseconds. 
  654.  
  655.  
  656. Microsoft Windows and the Keyboard 
  657.  
  658. When Microsoft Windows is active, keystrokes cannot be
  659. intercepted by a device driver such as HyperKey. Therefore,
  660. HyperKey is inoperative while using the Windows environment.

  663.

  681. HyperKey: Invalid Parameter:"UNKNOWN"
  682.       HyperKey found an invalid command line parameter.
  683.       Check your command line parameters against the
  684.       definitions in the previous section, "HyperKey
  685.       Parameters." HyperKey is installed with default settings.
  686.  
  687. HyperKey: Incorrect DOS version
  688.       HyperKey does not work with this Version of MS-DOS.
  689.       HyperKey requires DOS version 2.0 or later. HyperKey
  690.       is not loaded.

  692.                      Appendix A
  693.           Installation of Near Compatibles
  694.  
  695. For near compatibles, follow this procedure to test installation: 
  696.  
  697. 1.    Make a complete backup of your hard disk, if you have
  698.       one.
  699.  
  700. 2.    Put a copy of hyperkey.exe on newly formatted floppy
  701.       diskette.
  702.  
  703. 3.    With the Diskette in drive A, enter at the DOS Prompt: 
  704.       
  705.            A:>hyperkey
  706.  
  707. 4.    If everything functions normally, your compatible is
  708.       "near" enough to install HyperKey on your hard disk. 
  709.  
  710. 5.    If your near compatible requires that either a device
  711.       drive or TSR be installed to emulate IBM BIOS
  712.       functions, specify HyperKey immediately after the BIOS
  713.       Emulator.
  714.  
  715. 6.    If after you have installed HyperKey (specified in either
  716.       the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files) you
  717.       discover some problems, you can reboot the computer
  718.       and abort the installation of HyperKey by holding the
  719.       <Ctrl> <Left Shift> and <Alt> keys. For most
  720.       systems you must wait to depress these keys until the
  721.       system has finished initializing the keyboard, but before
  722.       the system begins reading the operating system device
  723.       drivers from the disk (or diskette). Generally, you can
  724.       depress the shifts keys when the disk or diskette (lights)
  725.       becomes active.
